Match Results Summary 2009/10

BDCL A : 15/04/10 The final match of the season we played host to a very strong West Bromwich team. The visiting team had already gained promotion from Div 2 to 1 without playing us! Our team was weaker than usual as many regular A team players were unavailable. Bizarre reserves needed for a Home match. Max, Peter Jones and Dave Wightman all drew. After playing us West Bromwich became Champions.

08/04/10 Our BDCL A team win at Tamworth with a score of 2-4 and so the team now have 15 league points in BDCL Div 2. Peter P Jones and Max Wooton won, Mike,Rob Marshall, Frank (acting captain) and Dave Wightman all drew. Well done all,

BDCL A team win 2 home matches by default. 25/03/10 Birmingham then 01/04/10 scheduled Greenlands fixture was forfeited. Both away teams had problems fielding a full team.)

Next match was against Tamworth & District 08/04/10 and we won 2-4.

30/11/09 BDCL A draw at S Birmingham.

03/11/09 Our BDCL A team lose at Olton 4-2 but well done to David Daniels who won his club debut match on board 1. Gordon Sands and Phil Porter drew.

14/01/10 BDCL A team beat visitors Olton B 4-2.

04/02/10 against Mutual Circle BDCL A score 3-2 with 1 adjournment pending so we're guaranteed a match draw whatever happens. 4-2 win was the final score.

19/02/10 Well done to our BDCL A team for triumphing over Stourbridge in a close match. Stourbridge trekked to Wolverhampton despite the snow and achieved wins against some of our higher grades so well done all.

25/03/10 BDCL A adjourned results arrive, Max Wooton won and Mike drew so Wolverhampton win the Boldmere St Michaels 2.5-3.5. Well done all..

WDCL A

11/02/10 WDCL A are trailing 1 point behind Shifnal & Telford A, score 2-3 with Mike Townsend's game adjourned. Mike won his adjourned game against D Gostelow and thus drew the match. 25/02/10 Mike Townsend's adjourned game against D Gostelow of Shifnal & Telford A continues. Mike won so the final match score is 3-3. Well done Mike and all.

21/01/10 On same night as a round 2 Home Pittaway Cup match our WDCL B team draw with Walsall Kipping. With the score at 1.5-2.5 to the visitors board 4 would decide the match. Dave Wightman won on board 1 and maintained his 100% record. Paul won on 4 and Peter Jones on board 2.

19/01/10 WDCL A score at Halesowen 2 - 2 with 2 adjournments pending

17/12/09 WDCL A beat St George's A. Well done all. We put up a strong team. So 2 match wins before Christmas is a nice present. Next match 19/10 at Halesowen.

10/12/09 Well done to our WDCL A team for beating West Bromwich. Our bottom 2 boards fell to the visiting team so we were trailing behind. Frank Wood(Cap) drew on board 4 and this proved crucial to secure the win as our top 3 boards Mike Townsend, John Mangdwende and Phil Porter all triumphed. Frank's team are in action again next week playing St George's. Let's hope we emulate this weeks success and may the best team win. Happy Christmas everyone.

03/12/09 A busy night for our club with 3 matches to play. Frank's Dudley league Div 1 team achieved 2 draws on boards 1 and 2 but lost match 2 of their debut season at Warley Quinborne. Our Div 3 team played host to the Warley Quinborne Div 3 team and they also narrowly beat Wolverhampton.

WDCL B

06/04/10 WDCL B play their final match of the season at Rugeley and finish with a win and so have 13 points, 4rth place in WDCL Div 2. Dave Daniels won, Gordon and Dave Wightman made it 6/6 for WDCL B..

The 3 teams finishing above us are Stourbridge A (Champions), Rushall A Runners up and Mercia A.

11/03/10 WDCL B beat Stourbridge B but we had a headstart. Well done all.

21/01/10 we draw with Walsall Kipping. With the score at 1.5-2.5 to the visitors board 4 would decide the match. Dave Wightman won on board 1 and maintained his 100% record. Paul won on 4 and Peter Jones on board 2.

Gordon's WDCL B team played Rushall B in the 2nd home match of the evening. Max won by default, Dave Wightman notched up another win and remained undefeated. Gordon and Richard lost on 3 and 2. Paul Walters faced a tricky and complex endgame but played it well and built on a time advantage. A draw was declined by the Rushall player but soon after time pressure led to a mistake and so Paul gained the full point we needed to win the match. Well done team and thanks to Rushall for another great battle. Wolverhampton B 3 Rushall B 2. A nice victory following the previous emphatic loss to Rushall A.

23/11/09 Our WDCL B had a tough match against Rushall A and lost 4-1 Away. David Wightman scored the only win of the night and remains undefeated this season on 5/5.

12/11/09 WDCL B team beating visitors Bushbury. 12/11/09 Our Dudley Div 2 team faced an unbeaten Boldmere St Michael's. Our team wasn't up to usual strength due to players supplementing our WDCL B but some good battles. Board 1 was close and Paul was optimistic about his position but low on time and blacks bishop pair trained on the white king.

05/11/09 Well done to our WDCL B team for beating visitors Boldmere St Michael's. A very close match.

Dudley League Div 1: 28/04/10 Stourbridge A and B visit us tonight to play our respective teams. Dudley A lose 1.5-2.2.5 and Dave Whiteman scores the only full point for the A team. 26/11/09 Wolverhampton beat Halesowen 3-1 in the first ever Wolverhampton, Dudley league Div 1 match.

02/02/10 DDCL Div 1 team draw at Halesowen and Dave Wightman increases his points tally and 100% record. Well done all.

Dudley league Div 2 29/04/10 Stourbridge B beaten 2.5-1.5 Paul Walters and Gordon Sands win on 4 and 3, Peter Pearson Jones draws on board 1. Our A team lose with the opposite score 1.5-2.5

Dudley League Div 3

25/03/10 Well done to our DDCL Div 3 for winning their final match of the season against Boldmere St Michael's.

Pete Hubbard didn't win but still has the 2nd highest club match percentage of the Winter season.

18/03/10 Our Dudley Div 3 team lose at home playing Halesowen despite P Hubbard beating a higher grade on board 2. Pete Hubbard now has 70% match performance and is 2nd only to Dave Whiteman on 94% after Dave won his adjourned game against T Poutney of Kidderminster A. Well done Dave as this drew the WDCL A team match and well done to Peter.

Cannock league Div 3:

11/02/10 Our Cannock league team lose at home playing St Mary's.

29/10/09 Cannock league team: Barry's team achieve their 3rd consecutive Cannock league draw this season. Very well done to Jared Gill for acheiving his first club win of the season and to Dave Wightman for making it 2 out 2 in his debut season for our club.

Humphrey's Cup Final 04/05/11 at Bushbury:

Wolverhampton Win WDCL Humphrey's Cup(U130). Warley Quinborne. I can honestly say as a board 3 participant that Warley Quinborne were worthy Finalists. Wolverhampton had a grading advantage but this hardly seemed significant as the match transpired. A very tense, rivetting rollercoaster final. A night to remember. Wolverhampton won by the closest of margins 1.5-2.5. On boards in ascending order Steve Wilson, Paul Walters win and Barry draws on board 2. A full Match writeup to appear today in WDCL section to accompany full match scores that are already there.

Humphrey's Cup(U130): Well Wolverhampton trek to Lichfield to play the Semi Final. An exciting tense and close match. A 2-2 Draw on the night but Wolverhampton win on board count! So we're finalists. Recent Successful Trophy years & Honours

Writeups courtesy of Captain Mike Townsend (Captain) and Dave Wightman playing his Pittaway Cup debut match.

For the second year in succession Wolverhampton has won the Pittaway Cup!

In a nerve-jangling finish last night at Bushbury Wolverhampton held on to beat Stourbridge 5 1/2 - 2 1/2.  This was the minimum required to win on the night as Stourbridge started with the great advantage of a 2 1/4 point handicap.  Just 1/2 point less (e.g. 5-3)  and Stourbridge would have won.  After early wins on Boards 1 and 2 and a spate of draws and one loss on the middle boards, it came down to the last two games and the last few minutes on the clock on Boards 7 and 8.   With Wolverhampton leading only by 3 1/2 - 2 1/2, we had to win both boards.  While Peter Pearson-Jones converted an ending with rooks where he was a minor piece ahead in his last few minutes, Mike Griffiths on Board 7 had a complicated ending with bishops and knights which looked probably drawn with best play. However, with each player down to the last minutes and seconds, Mike found the right line to win a pawn and reach a won position at which point his opponent lost on time.  Relief all round … and congratulations to the team on this successful defence of "our" cup!

Mike Townsend

The final was billed on here as a Mega Final. Stourbridge a club with many strong/high grades and newly promoted to WDCL Div 1 as Champions of the lower division. Wolverhampton had a +2.25 handicap due to being in a higher division. Winning would be a hard task.

Mike Townsend and John Mangdwende were first to win on boards 1 and 2. Both have great seasons and will have higher grades next season.

Frank drew on Board 3 then  Martin drew on Board 6.  This put us 3-1 up quite early.  Peter Jones was a piece up on Board 8 so Dave Wightman agreed a draw thinking that we were on course for the silverware, but then the drama began.  Max was unable to recover from being a pawn down on Board 5 and the score was suddenly 3.5-2.5.  We needed to win on Boards 7 & 8 to retain the title and Mike Griffiths then went a pawn down on Board 7.  The pressure built steadily as the clocks ran down until Peter secured the win on Board 8 with some accurate play in a difficult ending.  Mike recovered the pawn, and then captured a troublesome passed pawn to go a pawn up with just a bishop left each.  Finally, after a tense 20 minutes of manoueuvring, he broke through and was about to wreak havoc on his opponents remaining pawns when the Stourbridge flag fell and the Trophy was ours for the second year in a row.
So, a great result on a dramatic evening.

Thank you to Mike Townsend and his expert captaincy on accomplishing a victory in another high calibre Final! Also thanks to the Icelandic volcano for filling the sky with ash and keeping our Board 1 and team captain firmly in the country on the night of the match and to Bushbury for hosting, and to Stourbridge for making it a terrific contest.  Good luck to them in the first division next year.  Can we make it a hat-trick?  Only time will tell, but the evening was a great advertisement for chess.

Dave Wightman

Pittaway Cup Mega Final 21/04/10: Last year our team travelled to Stourbridge to play a strong Halesowen side who'd just been promoted from WDCL Div 2 to 1. This year we play last year's Pittaway Cup Final hosts Stourbridge. This year Stourbridge A have also been promoted from WDCL Div 2 to 1. Last year our team lacked some of our regular A team players. This year's Pittaway Cup Final may be a titanic battle. Can Wolverhampton retain the Pittaway Cup? April 21 2010 Bushbury Chess Club is a date for your chess diaries. May the Best team win!

21/01/10 Round 2 a busy night at our club with a total of 13 boards playing. Wolverhampton beat Stafford 5-3 in round 2 of the Pittaway Cup.

Jackson Trophy (County trophy): We're through to the Final against Cheddleton & Leek

Round 1 Bye, Round 2 we beat Rushall Away.

Jackson trophy Round 3 the Final is against Cheddleton & Leek, Wed 28 April 2010 at Stafford ess Club.
