WDCL Match News 2011/12

All Wolverhampton Chess Club 2011/12 Winter and Summer fixtures on website. All club fixtures and previous years fixtures in archives on site.

28/02/2012 Wolverhampton trek to Sedgley to play Mercia B. We outgrade the Mercian team but the final scoreline is a win 1.5 - 3.5. Ilan Dwek, Steve Wilson and Bob Khoshnevis all win their games. Frank Wood draws on board 1. Paul Walters doesn't manage to capitalize on an early opening edge as black and eventually concedes the only board loss of the night. Well done Wolverhampton and to Mercia B.

09/11/2011 WDCL Div 1. Wolverhampton have at least a match draw at Stourbridge. Match report is accessible from link in fixtures table.Wolverhampton win as just a draw was needed and G G Sands accepts draw offer..

08/11/2011 Brewood A v Wolvehampton B. A close and exciting match, Jonathan Hunt won the only full point of the point and draws on the remaining boards secured the match win for Wolverhampton. Well done all and to Brewood for a great match.

More details : 08/11/2011 WDCL Div 3. Wolverhampton travelled to play 2nd place and undefeated Brewood A. Brewood A had beaten an undefeated Stourbridge B the previous week. A match win would elevate us to joint second in WDCL Div 3.

Jonathan Hunt on board 3 gained a 4 pawn equivalent advantage early on, Rook, minor piece and 2 pawns and John Fenby had both of John's Knights. A series of checks on what appeared to be an uncastled King soon resulted in a full point for John on board 3, P Hubbard on board 5 had drew before this. Paul Walters opened well won a pawn, and had a positional advantage. White qualised material. Another pawn fell with good counterplay and an attack. A barrage of white pawns required careful defence and the game looked as though it would go to Brewood. Ilan Dwek drew and so Brewood needed to win on board 4 to draw the match. On board 4 the tricky position was just defendable but a late Kingside pawn push in the dwindling minutes gave whiet problems. Black had an unhindered f pawn that would queen in 2 moves, so did white but in the heat of battle and needing a draw to win, the draw was offered and accepted. Exciting match, well done team and to Brewood on playing some great chess. Ilan increased his WDCL points taller to 3 as is an early contender in the race for the W N Boydon Trophy.

03/11/2011 Frank's WDCL B team beat Mercia B but it was close. Mercia B were significantly outgraded but gained 2 full points on boards 3 and 4. full scores here.

13/10/2011 WDCL Div 1 Wolverhampton draw at Lichfield. Our first match of the season was a loss to Rushall A but our team was understrength that night. An almost optimum team did much much better Away at Lichfield. Lichfield out graded us on 5 boards and captain Gordon Sands drew with player 24 points higher graded, Peter P Jones drew with iMike Maher. 6 draws, 3 points each. Well done all. Writeup coming soon and full scores already on e Match card link.

21/10/2011 WDCL A and C teams both have home matches. West Bromwich beat Wolverhampton 1 - 5 and Rushall C beat Barry's C team. An upturn soon and it's still early in the season. full results for all of this weeks matches and some writeups are in fixtures sections.

11/10/2011 Wolverhampton v Brewood. Team was arranged very late for the 2nd WDCL Div 3 match of the season, Bob Khoshnevis and Ian Dwek were first to win in contrast to Paul Walters who lost early due to uncharacteristic major blunder on move 14. Frank Wood won and Colin Haughton had R+N and 2 connected passed pawns v David Buckley's R+N. Colin won and thus 1 - 4 score made a good match win for Wolverhampton.

WDCL Div 1. Wolverhampton beaten 2 - 4 by a strong Rushall side. Gordon Sands made his WDCL Div 1 captaincy debut and notched up the only win of the night of board 6. D Wightman and D Daniels drew. See full scores on new online e-cards.
