Wolverhampton WDCL (Div.1) 135

12 Jan 2012

Wolverhampton were very nearly at full strength for what should have been one of the season's toughest matches.  Fortunately, Walsall were without key players, giving Wolverhampton a much needed grading advantage of just under 8 points per board.  Dave Wightman was the first to show, agreeing a quick draw in a rerun of last year's Rock Cup final.  Peter Pearson-Jones went the exchange up early on before Rob Marshall agreed another early draw.  Phil Porter came under sustained, intense pressure to his castled king position.  Gordon Sands overstretched while searching for a win and lost a piece and the game.  On Board 1, Mike Townsend enjoyed a good attack, but began to run out of time.  Eventually, Peter Pearson-Jones's continued pressure secured another piece and the match, while Phil Porter's kingside pawns were shattered and the game lost.  This left the score at 3 - 2 to Walsall with one match adjourned in a materially level but complex position.  This was the last scheduled match in Walsall's current venue, so good luck and best wishes for the rest of the season as they move on to pastures new.
