Wolverhampton Summer League Quickplay & Awards. Thurs 29 July 2010 7.15pm onwards. Time control 10 mins all moves.
On Thursday 29th July 2010, Wolverhampton
hosted the Annual Summer League Quickplay
event and prize giving. The quickplay
consisted of a five round Swiss tournament
with 10 minutes each for all moves.
There were two sections, Open and Minor.
The Open consisted of 10 players and
was a tightly contested affair, culminating
in a deciding game in round 5 between
Dave Wightman (4/4) and Phil Staley (3/4).
Having advanced steadily to 4/4, Dave
dropped a rook in the middlegame of the
deciding match and ended up hanging on for
dear life. Eventually, the queens were
exchanged and, despite recovering the
rook, he was still four pawns to two behind.
Phil pressed for the win, sacrificing one,
then another pawn, in order to force his
way through. With the flag on the edge,
Phil queened his final pawn and was just
about to start shepherding Dave's king
into a corner of the board for the
inevitable checkmate when his flag fell.
Dave didn't have mating material left,
so the match was drawn in the most
dramatic way possible. The final result
was: 1st - Dave Wightman (4.5/5),
2nd - Phil Staley (3.5/5).
[The Minor was closely contested but Simon Jones, Ray Dolan, Roma and Peter Hubbard gained early leads and consolidated. Simon Jones a very deserved winner on the night. Several players shared joint 2nd place.
