Wolverhampton WDCL (Div.1)

Wolverhampton went to Stourbridge still looking for the first win of the season, after three losses and a draw. Both teams had absentees, leaving them evenly matched with Stourbridge having the slenderest of advantages of just under 3 points per board. Dave Wightman went an early pawn down, but Frank Wood was the first to finish, winning from a poor position with a slightly fortuitous bishop fork of the opposing king and queen. Peter Pearson-Jones drew and Mike Townsend won to put the visitors 2.5 - 0.5 up on the night. Ilan Dwek went a pawn up and Gordon Sands won an exchange, so the match position shifted heavily in favour of the visiting team. At the adjournment Ilan Dwek agreed a draw, with the additional pawn being stuck backwards and therefore unable to advance, leaving the match position at 3 - 1 to Wolverhampton. Dave Wightman was still a pawn down, only now with it blockaded but still dangerously placed on the seventh rank, while Gordon Sands was still an exchange up but with work still to do to secure a win. Thanks to Stourbridge for an interesting and keenly fought contest, and good luck for the rest of the season.
