Wolverhampton WDCL (Div.1) 117

02 Nov 2011

Wolverhampton went to Kidderminster with high hopes in what was always likely to be a closely contested campaign.  Unfortunately, Kidderminster were close to full strength while Wolverhampton were missing some key players, leaving a slight deficit of four grading points per board.  Nonetheless, a close game was in prospect and Gordon Sands led the way with an early draw in a symmetrical position.  Peter Pearson-Jones went a pawn down, but Jonathan Hunt broke up his opponent's pawn structure, generating two pairs of doubled pawns in the process.  Mike Townsend and then Phil Porter secured draws but Jonathan Hunt went down to a combination including a bishop sacrifice.  Peter Pearson-Jones recoved the pawn to secure another draw to leave the match in the balance at 3 - 2 down.  With the match on the line, Dave Wightman finally succumbed to a queen and double rook attack, making a crucial error while in significant time trouble.  So, a dissapointing loss has left Wolverhampton with just one point from the first four matches and still with much work to do to ensure survival.  Congratulations to Kidderminster, and good luck for the rest of the season.
