Wolverhampton Chess Club Newsletter Draft version Issue 2 2006/7

Editorial:  I hope everyone enjoyed Iissue 1. The winter season is almost complete now and what a season it's been. The B team haven't done as well as the A and C but have done better than some teams. The A team have really performed well and are on the pinnacle of an historic achievement. Both B and C incurr league penalty points the B survive in their divisions, but, it's been more costly for our C team considering their good form and certain promotion prospects.

WDCL Div.1 -

WDCL Div.2 -

WDCL Div.3 -

Wolverhampton A (2nd place runners in WDCL Div 1 2006/7. A closely fought contest where we led most of the way. Scoring 15 points from 10 matches. Won 7 drew 1 and our first loss of the season came against West Bromwich 05/03/07. We couldn't help having high hopes for our Walsall Kipping A team clash at home 15/03/07 as we fielded the strongest team for many years. Walsall Kipping only outgraded us on boards 1 and 2 and we lost on these boards. We outgraded the visiting team on all other boards but Parminder gained the only full point of the night on board 6 and with draws on the remaining boards score 2.5-3.5. Lichfield and Warley Quinbourne sit in joint 2nd place. 15 points is still a respectable points total from 10 matches. We can still become division champions but only if the 2nd place teams concede match points.

Wolverhampton B (4 wins out of 12 matches) The B team scored 8 points from 12 games but had 1 penalty point deducted under rule 3c.

The B team achieved a great win at home against Kidderminster B 11/01/07 with a 4-2 score and an adjournment and also beat Mercia at their home venue 27/02/07 in the B teams final match of the season. Max and Kelvin won on boards 1 and 3 respectively while Jeff Fox, Deryll Bird and captain Steve Wilson all secured draws as black on boards 2, 4 and 6.

The B team didn't initially do well due to absence of a permanent captain. To observers it may appear that the B team's main objective would be to survive in Div 2 and avoid relegation. This has been achieved.

Walsall Kipping B and Mercia B will join Division 3 next season for our C team to face.

4th place. As of Dec 7 2006 Wolverhampton C  regained top spot in WDCL league, Div 3 with our win over Halesowen B 07/12/06 and led by 1 point. Rushall B reached top spot having after playing 6 and our C team was only 1 point behind! Our C team gained a valuable point for drawing Away against Walsall Kipping and went to joint 2nd place with Stafford B with 10 points from 9 matches.
Our promotion hopes weren't over though as Stafford B had the 'mighty' Rushall team to play again. 21/02/07 Rushall beat Stafford depriving them of 2 points and boosted our league position by making us joint 2nd with Stafford B on 10 points each from 9 matches. Rushall became runaway leaders with 17 points from 10 matches and gained a default win a week early due to Halesowen defaulting.

Rushall's visit on the 25th of Jan was tense and we were all outgraded. A win against Rushall would have been akin to David conquering Goliath. Bob Koshnevis scored our only point that night against Syd Allen!

A valuable win against Lichfield at home should have kept our promotion hopes alive but a league penalty wdcl 5g and h reduced our Lichfield win to a draw plus 1 point deducted! Promotion seemed like a distant dream and aspirations depended on Stafford B. Indeed, our inevitable, crucial clash against Stafford at their home venue was tense. Paul got lost and arrived 10 mins late but amazingly still won with time to spare and after declining draw offers. Alas, we only achieved wins on board 4 and 5 so Stafford won and gained a 2 point lead on us with 2 matches left to our 1. Winning 2-3 at Halesowen 13/03/07 in our final match of the season was commendable but our slim chance of promotion was scupperred by Walsall Kipping rising in the table..

Our 10 points after 9 matches surpassed our entire points total for the whole of our previous Winter season and and we surpassed this by beating Halesowen away. We were strong contenders for the 2nd place promotion but didn't move far beyond this total partly due to rule 5g.

Blitz 10 Club Event 17/05/07

Dominic Bader scored 7.5 out of 8 and won the 1st place trophy in 100+ section. Martin May 2nd place in the 100+ with 5.5 points.

Rob Parker gained 6.5 points and thus the U100 trophy. Paul Walters came 2nd on 5 points in the U100. Full score table in members section of club website as well as gallery pics. Well done all and to Rob for organising.

WDCL Lightning tournament held 24 April 2007 was a memorable night. Our A team won the Trophy section and our C team did very well in the Minor and were in fact leaders for most of the night. Rushall would have to beat us 4-0 in the final round and did just that! So our team were awarded 2nd place. Good performances by ..
A Team: Dominic Bader, Rob Marshall, Mike Townsend, Parminder Sanghera.
C Team: Rob Parker, Bob Koshnevis, Claudio di Tomaso, Paul Walters

Cannock League Div 3 Dudley League Div 3 Walrus event: 3rd time lucky?

Claudio di Tomaso captain.

There are few matches in the Cannock League compared to other leagues. Wolverhampton have played 6 matches.  Won 2, lost 2 and drew 2. Our first match was a decisive win over Cannock St Mary’s 3½ - ½.  Our next match, a 3-1 defeat at home playinf Rushall.  Match 3 a good draw away playing Boldmere. Match 4 we lost away playing Brewood 30/01/07 but a week later 06/02/07 we beat Lichfield at home and drawing our final match at Rugeley gave us a 6 points total.

Three losses, one draw, 5 wins, 1 draw from 10 matches.  11 points gives us 2nd place in league. Warley Quinbourne are top and two match losses came against Warley Quinborne at home and away in our first and fifth match of the season. Loss number 3 was conceded to Hagley after the 2nd contraversial match of the season against them. 15/03/07 The Hagley captain bizarrely said he should be white on board 3 and was adamant. The board colours were set correctly but were reversed on the insistance of the Hagley captain and as there was some noise disruption from the visiting captain for our A team to contend with the Hagley captain's whims weren't challenged. The draw came away playing Hagley and involved a contentious board 3 game where Paul Walters's opponent made a blunder which would have a lost a rook at time control but exclaimed he'd made a mistake and retook his move much to the annoyance of Paul. Some of our best wins came against Boldmere St Michaels 4-0, Halesowen 4-0 and Mercia with a 3-1.

Walrus Event 30 April 2007 Rushall Chess Club. The hosts, Rushall didn’t win the Walrus trophy this year . It’s Wolverhampton’s 3rd year of participation and we won this event for 2007/8.
Our ten competing players in grade strength order for this 30

player, 15 board event were Dominic Bader, Martin May, Max Wooton, Kelvin Jones, Ben Marlow, Rob Parker, Colin Haughton, Bob Koshnevis, Nigel Collings and Barry Lewis. We conceded just 2 full points, Barry, Kelvin and Martin drew and wins for Max, Ben, Rob, Colin and Bob secured victory.

This triumph is especially sweet after our C team were beaten into 2nd place by the narrowest of margins a few days before in the WDCL Lightning event.

Wolverhampton scored 6.5 of the 10 points maximum in this 15 board event, Walsall Kipping 4.5 gave them joint 2nd place with Rushall in 3rd place on 4 points.

BDCL   Div.2 – BDCL   Div.4 –

Wolverhampton A in Div 2: (10 wins, 1 loss, l draw. 21 points from 11 matches.)

The Wolverhampton A team were undefeated for their first four matches and their first and only loss of the season came against Solihull at home. The result hinged on two adjournments and hope of a match draw!

Victory over Stourbridge A at home 17/04/07 earned us promotion to BDCL Div 1. The team had scored 19 points from a possible 22. Excellent results that gained the joint top position in the BDCL Div 2 with Kynoch & Barn also on 19 points. We would meet Kynoch & Barn 23/04/07 in a match analogous to an epic clash of the Titans for the A teams final match of the Winter season. Wolverhampton A had secured 2nd place at least. The best team would become Division champions. Our boards 5 and 6 substitutes, Parminder won on board 4 and boards 1-3 adjourned til 14/05/07.
Dominic drew prior to this date and so the championship hinge on Peter Thompson’s and Mike Townsend’s games. As of 14/05/07 our BDCL Div 2 A team haven't only gained promotion to Div 1 but are also Div 2 Champions as Mike and Peter's adjourned games were won. These two games had difficult positions and were crucial for the championship. Parminder also beat his rival and Dominic drew on board 1. Hence, the score 2.5-3.5 for our Away team. Captain Peter Thompson "I would like to thank everyone for playing so well throughout the season, including the substitutes. Well done to all players who have made this possible, including the substitutes, who have performed very well when asked to play. In particular. thanks to Dominic for playing in the last few matches. We will be sorry to see you return to Germany. I would like to wish you all the very best for the future.." Congratulations to our A team!

    Wolverhampton B ( Three wins, 2 draws. 7 points from 10 matches.)

Wins include an impressive result against an understrength Wolverhampton team playing Birmingham away 23/01/07 and also a 4-2 win against Lichfield.

7/12/06:  Our home match playing Westminster led to a shortage of regular B team players and necessitated a C team secondment.  Barry Lewis played board 5; Paul Walters played on board 6 in his first Birmingham league match and secured a decisive win. D Bird and Jeff Fox drew on boards 4 and 2 respectively and thus the scoreline 2-4.

Our next match against Walsall Kipping was also a loss on 16/01/07. Paul won again on board 6 against a player who's numerical grade would have suggested a board 3 slot and Jeff and Kelvin agreed draws on boards 2 and 3 respectively whilst board 1 was lost by default. Score 2-4. A great win by an understrength team followed a week later against Birmingham in an away match. Bob Koshnevis, Barry Lewis and N Collings all helped secure the match by winning on boards 3, 5 and 6 respectively..

Our final match 19/04/07 bought a strong undefeated Shirley & Lucas to our home venue. This team on 21 points had already gained promotion and needed 1 point to become champions. We were not beaten. We drew against this strong team and this heralds an excellent accomplishment.

WOLVERHAMPTON SUMMER LEAGUE WDCL Trophy's: BDCL Trophy's:

Brief update: A strong Rushall side beat our A team at home 24/05/07 in our first match but for match 2 04/06/07 our A team beat Kynoch convincingly at their home venue. Alas, this was the only match win for our A team in Div 2 where the maximum grade limit is 135.
B team: A bad start in their first Away fixture of the Summer league at Kynoch. Our 2nd fixture at Brewood wasn’t good either as our B team were beaten again by a very strong Brewood side I suspected at the time Brewood may romp away to first place. 07/06/07 Halesowen were beaten in our next fixture as were Stafford 12/07/07.. Thus giving us 6 points and placing us mid table in Div 3. The B team play their last match of the summer at Warley Quinbourne 19/07/07 on their turf. Let’s hope we reach 9 points! Some uncanny match scores 3-2 for every B team match! We’ll need to break the 3-2 pattern to win at Birmingham!

U110:   A team organised and captained by Barry won against a strong Rushall team at home playing in the first round of the WDCL U110 competition.  Kelvin Jones faced Peter Broomhall on board 1 and drew.  Rob Parker also drew against Syd Allen on board 2.  Colin Haughton and Paul Walters both won their matches on boards 3 and 4 respectively.    An excellent match win that ensures progression to round 2.

Wolverhampton didn't win their 2nd round fixture away at Halesowen played on 2 Jan 2007 .

WDCL :   Pittaway Cup (knockout)

Terrill Trophy: The Terrill trophy is played as a Knockout competition with teams handicapped according to the BDCL division they play in. In the A team's first match of the season it managed a win 4 - 2 against Tamworth (Both teams were in the same division so there was no handicap either way.) The next round was played December 12 away against Olton C with a -1.5 handicap. Wolverhampton A lost to Olton on this occasion 3½-2½ with 2 adjourned games being agreed as draws.

BDCL : Townshend and Barrington Trophies

The fastest club win ever? Colin Haughton played a very bold and somewhat spectacular game against Lichfield 22/02/07 at home for the C team. Achieving a win in just 17 moves perhaps partly due to a cheeky bishop sacrifice. Game is featured in club site members games section and Colin is the first to kindly contribute a masterpiece. Thanks Colin and well done!

Come on send your games or is Colin the only one who has great games to show off.
